Vatican Museums – Great Masterpieces

The eternal city of Rome is famous of its cultural and historical sights, but one of the most significant treasures in Rome’s environment are Vatican Museums.

Vatican Museum

If you choose to Travel to Rome, certainly take a whole day sightseeing tour to visit the city of Vatican. In fact, when you get there, you’ll apprise that one day is to short to look all that treasures. My suggestion is to book lodging in the vicinity of the Vatican. Than you can wander around whenever you want and get the feel of the city and its spirituality. Moreover, close to the Vatican, you can find Hotel Reservations at affordable prices.

If you use the City Metro, than you can arrive to any other attractions in Rome in a few minutes.

On permanent Exhibition in the Museums of Vatican are numerous of masterpieces that represent more than four thousands years of human past, from the head of the Egyptian king Mentuhotep, a portrait dating from 2050 BC, to pieces of modern art. These heritage from the art of the past and the present have been collected in the Vatican collections through the intelligence and love for the art of numerous popes. It is very hard to choose just a few pieces of art to be mentioned from the thousands of arts on show in the Vatican. But if I have to mention only one of masterpieces in Vatican, that have made the deepest impression on me it would be the final work of my favorite artist, one of the greatest artists ever, Raphael.

First, I have to note that even the main gateway of the Vatican Museum is one of the amazing masterpiece. The gateway was created in 1932 by the architect Giuseppe Momo as a new enter door into the Vatican Museums, opens through the very massive walls built in the 16th century for the protecting of Vatican. It consists of two statues, works by Pietro Melandri, depicting the two historic artists who spent the biggest part of their lives adding to the riches of the Vatican and the city of Rome: on one side there is genius of the Renaissance, Michelangelo, holding the sculptor’s mallet in his hand; and on the other side is the well known painter Raphael, holding the palette and brushes.

My favorite masterpiece in Vatican Museum is showed in Room VIIII. It is one of Raphael’s most powerfull works, painting named „The Transfiguration“, oil on wood, 410×279 cm, made on 1520.

Raphael, one of the greatest artists ever, died on 1520. at the age of only 37, before he could complete it. Because of the beauty of its colours, its formal perfection and its almost tangible spirituality, this painting can beregarded as Raphael’s artistic and religious testament. The painting looks like almost to be divided into two sections, one above the other, depicting two scenes described in the Gospels. Not long before his crucifixion Jesus asked the apostoles Peter, James and John to accompany him to the summit of Mount Tabor. The Gospels, in conversation with Moses and the prophet Elijah. This scene frightened the apostles and at the same time gave them strengths.

The lower session of the picture shows young man’s possessed by the demon. He is struggling with demon inside him. The man’s parents and relatives beg the apostles for help. The beautifuamazingl female figure in the foreground almost certainly represents Faith. She as well invites Christ’s disciples to act. The apostles point to Jesus, who actually expels the demon.

In this final work Raphael shows how, after seeing the frescoes in the Sistine Chapel, he has completely understood and assimilated Michelangelo’s genious new artistic message. All the figures are strongly rendered. Faith has the power and beauty of Sibyl one of the figure on Michelangelo’s painting. Raphael came close to finish this work and it was subsequently finished by his pupils.
